Pre-Call MA Intellectual Encounters of the Islamicate World For the first time in the academic year 2013-14 (starting on 14 October 2013), the Freie Universität Berlin is offering a one-year MA program titled "Intellectual Encounters of the Islamicate World". The overall goal of this course of study is to provide the graduate students with a thorough understanding of the deep and manifold interconnections between Muslim, Jewish and Christian intellectual output during Medieval times. Einstein Summer School September 2013 The third NEW FRONTIERS IN ISLAMIC STUDIES German-Israeli Summer School will deal with "Muslim Perceptions and Receptions of the Bible", and will take place in 8-12 September at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem. For more information please click here.

New Arabic edition of "Al-Kitab al-Khazari" Arab readers who want to know more on Judaism and Jewish Thought, as well as scholars of medieval Jewish and Islamic thought, will appreciate Nabih Bashir's new edition of Yehuda Halevi's "Al-Kitab al-Khazari - In Defense of the Despised Faith", transliterated and translated into Arabic, with extensive notes (Beirut and Baghdad: Al-Kamel Verlag, 2012).

Recent Developments

New item in the library: Jewish philosophy for Arabic readers This special item is designed for Arabic readers interested in medieval Jewish philosophy. It is an Arabic transliteration of a Judaeo-Arabic text by a Yemenite Jewish author, Ḥoter ben Shlomo, who wrote a commentary on the treatise by Maimonides (Mūsa ibn Maymūn), on his “Thirteen Principles of Jewish faith.” Many thanks to Muḥammad Ḥussein for his work to transcribe the text and to add explanatory notes, and to ʿAbd al-Salām Mūsā for editing the text.

Cooperation with the Research Unit Intellectual History of the Islamicate World Intellectual Encounters is excited to announce the cooperation agreement between Intellectual Encounters and the Research Unit Intellectual History of the Islamicate World directed by Prof. Sabine Schmidtke. The cooperation will include common research projects, e-learning courses, and connection between the websites. We are confident that this cooperation will enrich both projects.

New member of the Intellectual Encounters Steering Committee Intellectual Encounters is proud to announce that Prof. Sabine Schmidtke joined the steering committee of Intellectual Encounters. Prof. Schmidtke is Professor of Islamic Studies and Director of the Research Unit Intellectual History of the Islamicate World at the Freie Universität Berlin.

Historical Timeline is online Intellectual Encounters timeline displays details about major historical events, thinkers, and written works of the medieval islamic world. The timeline will expand and include more details in the future.

Virtual Library Upgrade Intellectual Encounters virtual library is currently being upgraded. More texts will be uploaded during the following months. You all can recommend to us texts for digitization.
